I’ve been using PR as an SEO tool for quite a while, but it is amazing how many SEO professionals leave it out of the strategy. In fact it is so good as a link builder, it almost seems like it should be illegal. A more complete picture of how this strategy can produce results involves weaving PR with social media and adding the same post to your website. In my own experience, web PR is good as an immediate link builder but it also has staying power because if it get’s picked up by the press, it can bounce around in ways that will surprise and delight you. So pull together your latest release and then start spreading the news.

If you start getting into promoting your site, you will begin to discover how complex it is. Besides word-of-mouth and the usual collateral materials like postcards, there are a huge number of on-site and off-site procedures you can use to attract visitors and rank higher in search pages. Fortunately there is also a rapidly expanding universe of helpful tools. One site that is mostly free and provides a kind of all-in-one approach is Submit Express. I like this site, especially for novices because the tools are free and they can quickly get you up to speed. For example, it has a couple of types of keyword suggestion tools, which are critical because keywords should be the place you start when you are looking to fix your site. There are some misleading labels in the navigation bar, but all the tools seem useful. Another tool subtitled “Keyword Popularity Tool” but also labeled “Keyword Traffic Estimator” gives you daily search volume from two surveys presumably based on the big search engines. Why is this important? Because if you are going to use a keyword you have to consider that your competition may also be using it and this may help keep you lower in search rank. It is a delicate business trying to balance the popularity of a keyword against the competition factor.

One thing that should help with your keyword choice is your competitive edge. Hopefully you offer something unique and this will give you a platform to start choosing terms. If you find you are offering the same product or service as everybody else, you need to define you own angle and that’s where your keyword search begins. If you want to find out what your competition uses you can use the handy tool offered by Submit Express. It’s called “Page Snooper” and all you have to do is type in your rivals URL and Page Snooper provides the page source of that page. Of course you can also do this from your browser by using the menu bar as follows: View>Page Source. Sometimes this is also accessed by using: View>View Source. Page snooper makes the process a little faster because you don’t have to be on the site to see the code. There are a bunch of other free tools as well, like “Free Submission”, “Meta Tags Generator” and “Reciprocal Link Checker”. So get started with some great free tools.

One of the biggest problems you confront when beginning to do your own SEO, is where to start. There is no set answer because it depends on where you find yourself. Most people who begin the SEO journey are dissatisfied with the traffic going to their site or would like to rank higher for particular search terms on Google and other search engines. So this means you have a website. The first thing I recommend is making sure you are registered with Google and the other main search engines like Bing and Dogpile. For Google, it is pretty easy, and all you have to do is submit the address of your home page to their “submit URL page”. Bing has pretty much the same procedure. Another step that I highly recommend for on-site SEO is to use Google Maps. If you have any possibility of getting business from your local market, it’s a great idea to set yourself up with this service. Simply go to Maps and click on “Put your business on Google Maps”. Follow the directions and you are on your way. Be careful about the keywords you use however. Take a look at other sites listed in your area and try to stake a claim to a search term (keyword) that is special to your business. Otherwise, you may have a problem ranking in the top 10. This is especially serious for Google maps users, because most visitors will never make it past the first page. The final very simple thing to get you started is to make sure you have an XML sitemap in your public directory. Ask your web designer (if you have one) or if you are doing your own site I recommend going to a fabulous site, xml-sitemaps and use their tool to create you own free xml map that you can then upload to your public directory. If you are having problems with this, site-maps has an excellent about page that explains everything you wanted to know. These simple steps including creating your sitemap will make a real difference and make you website easier to find.

I just found a blog that has to be the bible of Wordpress SEO. The Guru behind this mountain of useful information is Joost de Valk, pronounced yoast. The beauty of Joost’s blog is that it is well written, well organized and contains everything you wanted to know but did not know how to ask. Joost literally takes you by the hand and guides you around your blog until you scream uncle. I plan to be spending a lot of time with his wisdom because I am determined to be the go to guy for Traffic on both websites and blogs. So rather than keep you waiting while I sing praises to Joost, head over to his blog and start learning. We have nothing to lose but our low rank. BTW, he also provides a video that covers the SEO magic. See you at yoast.com

What exactly is a “keyword”? Well it is not necessarily just a single word. It can also be a phrase. And these “keywords” determine to a large extent the amount of traffic you get, the amount of targeted traffic, your search rank, and ultimately visitor behavior once they get to your site. So I guess you could say they are important. I wrote in my last post about one tool, Google’s Keyword Tool, but there are so many other ones. Another popular one is the service offered by Wordtracker which costs about $59 a month. I subscribed for a while, but found I wasn’t using it that much. SpyFu is another tool that I think offers more value for the money. There is a free version which not only gives you keyword suggestions but also gives you a limited list of the keywords your competitors are using. This is very useful because it will help you develop your own marketing strategy. SpyFu also offers a whole handful of services you won’t find elsewhere for that same $59 a month. I recommend trying the monthly subscription, rather than signing for a whole year, until you see if it’s really useful for you. And if you plan to do any online advertising using services like Google Adwords, then SpyFu’s Keyword Smart Search is a must. I promised you a discussion about how to work with your existing site, but I think that will have to be the subject of my next post. In the meantime, let me know your thoughts on keyword tools. For a more exhaustive list of keyword tools check out this list of twelve tools at the SEO Company site.

There are two major phases in getting more traffic online. The first phase is building your site so that it is search friendly. I don’t want to knock many advertising agencies and web design shops, but a lot of them don’t have time for this part of the job. Rather than getting into why this happens, let’s go on to see how to make sure your site is optimized from day one. This begins with what you want to sell on the web. You may just want to build your brand, but that is still a form of selling.

Once you decide on your product or service, the next step is to find keywords that describe it. One of the best tools is the Google Keyword tool. This tool will not only suggest a group of keywords to be used in your page content, it will also tell you how popular your word or phrase is. And there’s more, the tool also lets you know about your the competition for the keyword. Knowing the competition for a keyword can help you decide if you want to include it on your site. Too much competition for your keywords or keyword phrases can make it hard for your site to achieve a top search ranking against other sites that use those keywords. Here is my advice: make sure that you use keywords that describe your competitive edge, especially when designing the site. Try to be as specific as possible. A general keyword like “men’s clothing” has a lot of search popularity but it won’t get you to the top of Google’s first page. If you need help choosing keywords before beginning the site design process, consult a web marketing professional.

Once you have a good group of keywords you are ready to start the building process. Before you begin designing, however, make sure you’re clear about what you want the site to accomplish, for example, selling shoes. With your keywords and goals create an outline and copy headings to use as you begin to rough out the structure. I like to use mind maps and flow charts. With a flow chart of the site you are ready to start creating. Use your keywords in:

1. Page titles –– keep them short and specific to the content of each page.
2. Navigation Titles –– say “contact (your business name)” not “contact us”
3. Meta data including meta tags, meta descriptions, etc.
4. Page content –– make sure your page copy includes important keywords
5. Headers
6. Alt tags –– where possible use keywords in your image descriptions

If you are not designing or coding the site yourself, make sure you discuss these items with your web design team. It is amazing how many web sites for large companies ignore keywords in the site structure and try to rely on their brand name or web advertising to get traffic. For an evaluation of your site structure, email jim@newergy.net. I will send you a free report about your site. And watch for my next post where I talk more about keywords and what to do if you already have a site.
